Staff Involve staff members in the decision making processStaff participation in annual appraisal of the setting.Self-evaluation opportunities for staff, regarding their own performance.

The organisation of annual meetings, where staff are invited to share their views.

Encourage staff members to offer their opinion; treat each member equally, provide each member with the same information. Introduce new staff members to parents, children and existing staff. Create a staff handbook and include staff in the writing of policies and plans for the setting.  Invite staff to represent the setting at conferences etc.Regular supervision by a senior staff member will provide direction, encouragement, identify gaps in learning/practice and most importantly support.Encourage staff members to access courses & training to update & increase their knowledge base.

Have a written agreed ‘career plan’ for each staff member.

Duties, Roles & Responsibilities should be agreed and written in staff handbook & contract of employment.

BCCN and Barnardos produced ‘Your Learning & Development’ which contains a section about managing staff.
